Surprising Discovery Finds Multiple Tattoos May Reduce Melanoma Risk – Huntsman Cancer Institute

IARC – International Agency for Research on Cancer / World Health Organization shared Huntsman Cancer Institute’s post on LinkedIn, adding:

” ‘The results that tattoos could decrease melanoma risk surprised us, but this isn’t a black and white case of ‘get more tattoos, and you could lower your risk of melanoma,’ says Rachel McCarty, former doctoral student at Huntsman Cancer Institute, current post-doc at IARC, and first author of the study.”

Quoting Huntsman Cancer Institute’s post:

“A new study from Huntsman Cancer Institute, Led by Jennifer Doherty, PhD, found that people with multiple tattoos may have a lower risk of melanoma—a surprising discovery that challenges prior assumptions.

As tattoos grow more common, uncovering how they may influence cancer risk is an important step in improving prevention strategies. Researchers stress that more studies are needed to understand these findings and their implications.
