Raphael Cuomo: New Study Links Cancer-Promoting Behaviors to Distinct Genetic Patterns in Colon Tumors

Raphael Cuomo, Professor and Scientist at University of California, shared on LinkedIn about a paper published on Future Science:

“Just published today in the journal Fututre Science, I develop a new statistical approach to show that genetic mutations in colon tumors were distinctly different depending upon the patient’s history of cancer-promoting behaviors. In particular, tumors in patients with histories of tobacco consumption had very different molecular patterns compared to patients with other behaviors.

This paper is important because it shows that behaviors promote and prevent cancer through specific biological pathways. This suggests that cancer arising among patients with one pattern of behaviors cannot be treated the same way as cancer arising from patients with different behaviors.”
