“Do We Still Need Axillary Dissection for Low-Volume Nodal Disease After NACT? AXSANA Says No
The findings the international multicentre AXSANA cohort study (Kühn et al., BJS 2025) shows that completion axillary lymph node dissection (cALND) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with isolated tumour cells or micrometastases provides no added clinical value—despite frequent nodal upstaging, it did not alter systemic treatment decisions.
These findings strongly suggest that cALND should not be performed for diagnostic purposes alone in this setting.”
