“Voice of the families, Post 41, Girma, and his mother
Girma is a 14-year-old boy from Addis Zemen, Ethiopia, living with his parents and four siblings. Their home is 150 km from the University of Gondar Hospital, the only pediatric oncology center in the region.
Four months ago, Girma developed fatigue, weight loss, and loss of appetite. He was diagnosed with blood cancer and began chemotherapy. His parents, who work as daily laborers, faced enormous emotional, financial, and logistical challenges—being far from home and their other children while struggling to afford daily expenses.
Through CANCaRe Africa’s Zero Abandonment Cash Transfer Programme, the family received support that brought not only financial relief, but also hope. It allowed them to stay with Girma during treatment without having to make impossible choices between care and survival.”
