Launch, sustain, or grow investigator-initiated biomedical research at resource-limited U.S. colleges and universities. The NIH SuRE (R16) program funds independent faculty who are not currently PD/PI on NIH Research Project Grants (except SuRE/SuRE-First), builds campus research capacity, and provides meaningful research experiences for undergraduate and graduate students across NIH mission areas.
Eligibility Criteria:

Institutions: U.S. higher-ed awarding BA/BS and/or graduate biomedical degrees; ≤6 million USD/year in NIH RPG total costs in each of the prior two fiscal years; ≥25% Pell-supported undergraduates (IPEDS, either metric, both most-recent years).

PD/PI: Single PD/PI only (no MPI); full-time independent faculty at the applicant institution; not PD/PI on active NIH RPGs (R01, R21, R15, R35, U01, etc.); may apply in final year or NCE of SuRE/SuRE-First/SCORE.

Project: Biomedical research within NIH mission; clinical trials not allowed; authentic student participation required (include a Student Involvement Plan).
