Wellcome PhD Fellowships for Health Professionals

Wellcome’s PhD Programmes for Health Professionals train registered clinicians and allied health professionals in supportive research environments—building research capability and preparing diverse future leaders in clinical academia through fully funded three-year PhD fellowships.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Registered health professional (e.g., nurse, doctor, dentist, pharmacist, allied health, clinical psychologist, healthcare scientist, vet, social worker) with potential for a career in academic health research.

  • Accepted into one of the Wellcome-supported PhD programmes based at UK centres of excellence (see list below).

  • Meet individual programme-specific entry requirements (e.g., professional registration, prior degree).

Funding Details:

  • Duration: 3 years (full-time equivalent; part-time options available)

  • Amount: Salary at the appropriate UK clinical scale; UK-home-rate PhD fees; college fees; research expenses; essential travel (including childcare or caring costs); training (technical, transferable skills).

  • Exclusions: Overheads are not funded; international fee differential not covered.
