Notice of Special Interest: Research Projects to Develop Oncoaging Models for Cancer Research

Due Date:

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and National Institute on Aging (NIA) invite applications to establish or improve cancer models that integrate age-related biological changes. These “oncoaging” models should recapitulate how aging influences tumor initiation, progression, and treatment response, enabling mechanistic and translational studies relevant to older adults with cancer.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Any U.S. or foreign higher education institution, nonprofit research organization, or for-profit entity eligible to submit under the chosen parent FOA (e.g., R01, R21).

  • Principal Investigator must possess appropriate credentials and experience in cancer biology, aging research, or allied fields.

  • Proposed project must address one or more aims listed in the NOSI, such as developing or validating preclinical oncoaging models or elucidating mechanistic links between aging hallmarks and tumor biology.

  • Applicants cannot submit applications that ignore the biological context of aging or focus solely on cancer risk/prevention without modeling age-related changes.

Funding Details:

  • Mechanisms: Submit under one of the following parent FOAs (or their reissues) through July 31, 2027:

    • PA-20-185 (R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

    • PA-20-195 (R21 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

    • PAR-22-216 (R21 Clinical Trial Optional)

    • PAR-22-099 (R01 Clinical Trial Optional)

    • PAR-23-281 (R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

  • Budget & Duration: Follow the parent announcement’s instructions for budget caps and project periods (typically up to 5 years for R01; up to 2 years for R21).

  • Inclusion of “NOT-CA-23-092”: Must enter “NOT-CA-23-092” in Agency Routing Identifier box 4B of the SF424 (R&R) form to ensure consideration under this NOSI.

Deadline:

All parent FOA due dates through July 31, 2027 (expiration date).
