“How many future cancers could be linked to CT scans in the U.S.?
A recent risk model projects that 93 million CT exams performed in 62 million patients in 2023 may lead to ~103,000 future cancers.
Key findings:
- Children face higher risk per scan, but adults account for most cases due to higher scan volume.
- Lung, colon, leukemia, bladder, and breast (in females) were the most common projected cancers.
- CT scans of the abdomen/pelvis and chest contributed the most to projected risk.
If current practices continue, CT-associated cancers could make up ~5% of all annual cancer diagnoses.”
