Nihar Desai, Bone Marrow Transplant Physician at Princess Margaret Cancer Center, shared a post on X:
“Anemia in CKD
We all know that CKD = Low EPO
What’s the mechanism? The interstitial cells transdifferentiate into MYOFIBROBLASTS instead of EPO producing cells
Low EPO producing cells = Low EPO = Anemia
It’s not just the Low EPO that causes anemia in patients with CKD
CKD = inflammation = High Hepcidin = Low iron absorption = anemia
Blood loss during dialysis = iron deficiency anemia
CKD = high Uremic toxins = low red cell production.”
