The 18th Belgian Symposium on the Integration of Molecular Biology Advances into Oncology Clinical Practice and Post-MASCC took place on 29th and 30th November 2024. It was held at the Thon Hotel Bristol Stéphanie in Brussels. The event brought together leading experts in oncology, molecular biology, and supportive care to discuss the latest advancements in cancer research and clinical practice.
The conference covered a broad range of topics, with a special focus on the integration of molecular biology into oncology clinical practices. Key sessions addressed the comprehensive concept of supportive care for cancer patients, highlighting multidisciplinary care pathways, the benefits of hospital-at-home models, and the challenges faced by cancer survivors. Presentations also delved into specific issues like iron-deficiency anemia in advanced cancer patients and the importance of code status documentation in oncology care.
The conference featured a “Young Session” aimed at mentoring the next generation of oncologists. Titled “Generation Y and the Future of Oncology: Career Challenges and Opportunities,” this session provided an opportunity for young professionals to engage with experienced mentors in both clinical and research careers.

The Belgian Society of Medical Oncology (BSMO) is the professional association for Belgian medical oncologists, an officially recognized medical specialty. For over 40 years, medical oncologists have been responsible for the treatment of all types of cancer, both localized and advanced, using various medicines, including chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy.
Medical oncologists work in a multidisciplinary setting, collaborating with specialists in radiation oncology, surgical oncology, and diagnostic fields to provide comprehensive cancer care.
To become a medical oncologist, one undergoes three years of training in internal medicine, followed by an additional three years of specific training in medical oncology. This training is complemented by a three-year interuniversity postgraduate course and examination in Medical Oncology. Clinical and translational research is an integral part of this education, ensuring that oncologists develop a deep understanding of cancer biology and the mechanisms of action of various cancer treatments.
