“Voice of the families post 29 Yalemzerf Wasihun and her mother
Meet Yalemzerf Wasihun and her mother. Yalemzerf is the sixth daughter in her family. She lives with her parents and five siblings in Guagusa Shikudad district in Ethiopia, approximately 300 kilometers from the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital that has the only pediatric oncology center in the region.Eight months ago, Yalemzerf, was suspected of having kidney cancer and was referred to the pediatric oncology center. Receiving this devastating news was incredibly tough for her parents, both emotionally and financially. One month after the initial suspicion of cancer, Yalemzerf finally reached the pediatric oncology center. There, the diagnosis was confirmed, and treatment was initiated.
She has since completed six cycles of chemotherapy and is now waiting for surgery. Yalemzerf is enrolled in the Zero Abandonment from Start to Finish cash transfer program, which has greatly improved communication and mutual understanding between her family and healthcare providers.
Appropriate consent given.”
