Martin Harutyunyan, Medical Oncologist at the
“My journey in palliative care began 1.5 years ago when I presented pain management and palliative care to primary care physicians. Although the presentation didn’t go well, the topic stuck with me. Two days before the deadline, I stumbled upon the 2023 ESCO Mentorship Programme and applied immediately. I was delighted to receive an acceptance letter from ESO and was even more thrilled to find out that Dr. Matti Aapro would be my mentor. I knew that my professional life would be forever changed from the first Zoom meeting with Dr. Aapro. He supported me every step of the way to becoming a palliative care specialist. We had online meetings twice a month and three in-person meetings over the past year. During these meetings, Dr. Aapro showed me what ideal supportive/palliative care looks like and introduced me to many experts in oncology and supportive/palliative care. With his help, I was able to improve the quality of life of our patients.
I am grateful to the European School of Oncology for this amazing opportunity. Dr. Matti Aapro and his team have shown me all aspects of palliative care and helped me make a difference in the lives of our patients.
Although our mentorship program has officially ended, we will continue to collaborate for the benefit of our patients.”
